Welcome to the Sharp Family in NC blog. There are many Sharp families. I am writing about the genealogy of the Sharps in eastern North Carolina that includes some of my ancestors. It is not like a regular blog that posts on current events and does not go back and makes changes to prior posts. Rather it is an online draft genealogy that I hope to continue to improve. I intend to continue to modify this document on an ongoing basis and welcome all comments, additions, and corrections. This includes going back and correcting material already posted when new evidence arrives. I will post regularly for several months until I have provided all the research that I have completed. Then I will make periodic updates through new posts and corrections to existing material. You suggestions are welcome.
I am Bill Ives, the grandson of Gladys Sharp Ives and the great grandson of Henry Clay Sharp of Harrellsville, NC. A few years ago I wrote a family history of the Ives family (my father's side) and the Fleming family (my mother's side). In both family histories I also looked at the maternal sides going back many generations. I started this Sharp family blog on the family of my paternal grandmother as an experiment in 2004 shortly after I started my other blog, Portals and KM, a more business oriented blog (http://billives.typepad.com/portals_and_km/) focusing now on web 2.0 with music and art covered on the weekends.
I am now going to start up this family history blog again after a long absence (see recent posts below). However, I likely will be posting less frequently than Portals and KM which is daily. I am starting with the ancestors of Henry Clay Sharp, publishing two or three a week. Then I will cover some of the towns in North Carolina and Virginia where the family lived such as Harrellsville, NC, Murfeesboro, NC, Winston, NC, and Ahoskie, NC. Then I will look at Colonel Starkey Sharp (1809-1867) and some of his family. Starkey was the brother of one of my ancestors, Jacob Sharp (1814 - 1881). There are a number of Starkey and Jacob Sharps so it can be confusing. I will also look at the families of some of the women who married Sharps such as the Powells and the Parkers. For privacy purposes I am not going to write about the three current generations but deal in the past as this is an experimental history. I hope it will be useful. I may try some other family history blogs to share my research on other branches of the family. The Ives family blog will likely be next
This informal Sharp family history was put together from a variety of sources such as Bell, Mary Best, Colonial Bertie County North Carolina Deed Books A - H 1720-1757. Southern Historical Press and Winborne, Benjamin, The Colonial and State Political History of Hertford County, N.C (I will post a list tomorrow). Every attempt was made to use first hand sources and I tried to avoid speculation. However, some of the sources may not be validated and some of the material is extracted from books, slightly modified.
I did not continue this Sharp family history blog at the time I started as I wondered how I would get people to come. I still do not have the answer but I am going to try again. If you find this blog useful, tell others. If your write a blog on family history and like what I am doing link to me. Let me know who you are and I will take a look at what you are doing. Perhaps we can learn from each other both in terms of substance and style.
Feel free to use any of the material in this blog for your own work, online or offline. I only ask that you credit the source. Thanks. Bill Ives

Hi, Added a new value add to my blog this weekend - a news widget from http://www.widgetmate.com/news I always wanted to show latest news for my keywords in my sidebar. It was very easy with this widget. Just a small copy paste and it was done. Great indeed.

I was looking for info on Hunter Sharp (1861-1923) and his family. I have a postcard album that belonged to one of his daughters (Catherine or Myra). Some of the cards might be of interest to a descendant but I don't know if Catherine or Myra married. Nor do I have any info on Hubbard Sharp. Do you know anything about the next generation?

I am the daughter of Hubert Hare, born in NC. Wondering if you have any information on the Hare family that may be part of our heritage. His father was Hubert Hare as well. His mother Juanita Rhoades. Wondering if and when the family came to the US from either Ireland or England. Thanks!

I think I may have some interesting info... my grandfather was Jesse Powell Tayloe the Ist..... His father was Martin Luther Tayloe married to Carrie Tayloe Tayloe... Martin Luthers father was James Tayloe the II and who married Ann Elizebeth Powell ( Tayloe).. Both are buried here at our family farm near Aulander in Hertford county N. C.
Of interest is an original civil war letter from John R Powell dated 1861 from Seven Pines near Richmond Virginia...I also have some of his confederate records ( he was captured in 1865 at Fort Fisher and had advance to Lt buy wars end) I cherish this beautifully written letter ( he was very articulate)....to Anne( Elizabeth Powell)... I would be happy to make a copy of same for someone in the Powell family etc if they are interested... Years ago, I joined the SCV under John R Powell AND Capt Langley Tayloe ( near Ahoskie at Fraizers Crossroads... our family farm survives as does the very beautiful home of my GGGF Langley Tayloe... Jesse Powell Tayloe, II 8/2008----252-345-1867-

Hello,
I am the Great-G Granddaughter of George Riley Sharp Born South Carolina.
He is the son of William (H?) Sharp and Barbara Hunter.
I am sure that this is part of a Sharp family at Harpers Ferry during the Rev War.
I have grouped this family surname to families in North Carolina (Lemon,Lyon, etc).
I am a traveler to locations of past family sites to walk the footsteps and I need help with the complicated Sharp lines.
Could you help? Thank you.
June

Hi, my ancestors were the Sharps of Harrellsville, NC, Hertford County. My great, great grandfathter's name was Bucarell Sharp, his wife's name was Millie Burroughs Sharp. They had one son, whose name was Joseph Burrell Watson Sharp. I am trying to find out any info on them. They lived on a plantation in Hertford County. The only plantation in Hertford County was the Hare Plantation - is there any way that anyone would happen to know how I would get a slave list or slave census for that area or for that plantation?
