I went to my third Oak Street Poboy Festival a few weeks ago. It is a big event for our neighborhood with tens of thousands of visitors. There was again great music and food.
We started off listening to our neighbor, Chris Jones play some old school R&B with 3 Piece Spicy at the Oak Wine Bar. They are a subset of the 101 Runners, the great Mardi Gras Indian Band we have seen a number of times, including the last two Jazz Fests. Between the two of us we shared the following six excellent poboys and some corn on the cob.
The Sammich - Speckled Trout Meuniere Sammich dressed with Smoked Tomatoes, Arugula and Celery Leaf Salad and Meuniere Mayo on the left and Red Fish Grill - BBQ Oyster Poboy on the right.
Walker's BBQ - Cochon de lait Po Boy: Pecan-wood smoked pork butt on fresh baked French bread dressed with Walker's famous wertie sauce and raw cabbage;
Boucherie - Barbecue Shrimp Po Boy on the left and Crabby Jack's - Slow Roasted Duck Po Boy with Green Apple Cole Slaw on the right.
Live Oak Café – herb butter corn on the cob
We also had a Creole Bánh Mì from the Palace Café – Braised Chappapeela Pork Belly, Satsuma-Sriracha Aïoli, Pickled Farm Vegetables, Cilantro, Cucumber. Theresa Andersson and John Gros played at the close of the afternoon on the stage at the end of Oak Street. They had a strong band behind them and went through selections from the songbooks from both artists.
