I did a post on Louisiana Vs. Texas BBQ. Now as I travel through much more of the South this one picks up with samples from Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. This is a very unscientific sampling taken from doing a search on the likely places we might stop for a meal.
This first is the Real Pit Bar-B-Q 939 Fort Dale Rd, Greenville, AL 36037 (334) 382-8810 - Real Pit is in the parking lot of the Shell gas station, next door to the Quality Inn. It is a small cinder block building with a take out window. The food is good and the prices are reasonable. There are a couple of picnic tables under an awning to sit at which we used. It is certainly the best food option at that exit. We had pork ribs, beans, and slaw. The ribs were the large country cut, a little fatty but also tasty.
The second is Sticky Fingers is very upscale for a BBQ place but there is a nice variety of cue options, good beer, and excellent background music. You can find their barbecue restaurants across the Southeast. If you want to eat cue in a run down shack, this is not the place for you but the food is fine. We stopped at the one at 277 Robert C Daniel Jr Pkwy Augusta, Georgia (706) 733-7427. We had a baby back ribs and brisket combo and they threw in pulled pork at no extra cost. There was also fried corn on the cob as a side. The pulled pork was excellent and the brisket had a nice smoky taste. The sauces were too sweet
The third is Shane’s Rib Shack. It is an expanding chain that started as a small restaurant outside Atlanta in McDonough, Georgia. As the site states, “founder Shane Thompson quit his neck-tie-wearing corporate job, dusted off his grandfather’s secret sauce recipe and along with the support of wife Stacey, made his dream of owning a family BBQ restaurant come true.” We went to the one located at 1940 Hoffmeyer Rd on Florence, SC 29501 (843) 679-3503. It was situated in a mall so no country atmosphere, although they tried to emulate this inside. We had ribs, pulled pork with fried okra. The ribs and the sauces were the best of the these three.
Next we will move on to a number of places in North Carolina. Here our NC picks are from knowledgeable residents of the state, well known for its cue. We also had a good article in the Our State Magazine for additional reference.
