Over ten years ago Google added a new and transformative dimension to search with its page rank concept. Let the readers help determine what content has the highest value and also look at currency, along with relevance This has become very useful. I use it every day and it is the default home page for my laptop. However, the top results on any given search are often dominated by the sites using the best SEO techniques. We have all experienced this. I also have used it to my advantage with some of the blogs I write and helped some of my consulting clients with this effort. Of course, I only use legit techniques as do most web site people but not everyone does. I mainly try to provide good relevant content and let the readers respond. Google does its best to police any bad behavior and stay ahead of the spammers and black hat SEO perpetrators.
As discussed in: How Will Social Search Affect Social Media and SEO?, over the past few months, “Google and Bing have started to allude that they are beginning to increase the impact of social media content and links on their search results, citing that social networking activity is a strong indicator of what might be most relevant to consumer searches.”
This post looks at some of the impacts of this move. Among those cited were, increased importance of social media buzz around brands/businesses, increased importance of social media links, and more brand benefit from search engines. In other words social media, will be become an increased playing field for SEO. The word optimization was used at lot. The brands and sites that are best at SEO within social will prevail, not necessarily those with the best products or ideas. This move may likely make it harder to us to find the really good content as it gets buried beneath the mounds of optimized content.
