Images of New Orleans Neighborhoods 2010 Part Ten: Uptown Below Magazine Street

This is the tenth in a series of images of New Orleans neighborhoods taken in February 2010 the weekend before the Super Bowl victory and two weeks for Mardi Gras. I certainly did not have time to cover them all but this series will provide a glimpse of the city that I hope you will want to visit.

This post covers the Uptown area between Magazine Street and the river. It is roughly the same as the offical West Riverside neighborhood.   It includes the great music venue, Tipitina’s and some good eating places,  including Dick and Jenny’s, Franky and Johnny’s, and Domillise’s Po-Boys. I sampled the last two on this trip.  It was also the location for the recent movie Love Song for Bobby Long.  There are a lot of the long thin shotgun houses here. They are usually no more than 12 feet wide, with doors at each end. The term "shotgun house" came from the saying that one could fire a shotgun through the front door and the pellets would fly cleanly through the house and out the back door (since all the doors are on the same side of the house). The first picture is an example of a double shotgun and the second shows a single shot gun. This great series continues. In an earlier post, I think you included a map that showed the neighborhoods or streets you photographed. That helped me get a sense of the scope of New Orleans. Would you consider including a map with the next installment?

Thanks Paul - the next one is the zoo. But then after that comes Riverbend, one of the places I lived and there is a map - also images from my time there in the 50s. Bill
