Communications Workers of America (CWA) recently releases the results of aggregated data from nearly 230,000 Internet users who took the online Speed Matters Speed Test. Rhode Island tops the list for the second year in a row at 6.8 mbps, while Internet users wait the longest for downloads in Alaska (0.8 mbps). I wonder if varies between the long dark winters and the day light heavy summers. My state, Massachusetts ranks fifth in the US.
However, these results are very slow compared with the many other countries. Japan has an average download speed of 63 mbps, in South Korea it is 49 mbps and France has an average speed of 17 mbps.
Larry Cohen, president, Communications Workers of America. “Speed matters to our economy and our ability to remain competitive in a global marketplace. Rural development, telemedicine and distance learning all rely on truly high-speed, universal networks.” “We are the only industrialized nation without a national policy to promote universal, high-speed Internet access—and it shows,” added Cohen.
This is another example where the Feds do not have their act together. I think we should provide free wi-fi as a utility like roads. Let’s get into the 21st century.
