Our local paper had a story, Blogging for dollars, recently on how some pople have made good money writing their blog. One of the winners was Jay Brewer of Arlington, who has set up a series of blog doing product reviews for stuff like coffee machines and shaving equipment. His blogs are full of ads. The coffee one had green Mountain Coffee banners and other coffee related ads running down either side. It remains me of some of the bloggers I saw on the Google Adsense forums who do these niche service blogs to generate ad money. Jay’s blogs seem a bit more upscale but same idea. However, he will only make the ad money if he is providing a useful service to attract readers.
The Globe article said that “blog ad marketplace has also surged -- from $100,000 in 2002, to an estimated $36.2 million in 2006, according to PQ Media. Blog advertising is expected to grow to $300.4 million in 2010.” They mentioned some of the possibilities beyond Google Ads. AuctionAds.com, launched in March, provides bloggers with an eBay widget that allows them to embed relevant product ads. PayPerPost.com has become a broker between advertisers and bloggers, offering to pay bloggers to write about a product. There are many other ways to make money that the Globe did not mention. It is hard to keep track of them. What is your favorite way to monetize your blog? web 2.0 marketing
