What you're seeing is the rise of blog-specific ad networks. Boing Boing is, I believe, part of the Federated Media network (so is MetaFilter and a bunch of other high-traffic sites). Blogads has been around for a while. Wonkette is owned by Gawker Media, which has its own ad system (as do all the "ist" city blogs).

Here in Boston, a bunch of us have been plugging away at a hyperlocal network - - which has taught me some respect for the folks who sell ads for a living.
