Here is a useful, well-written introduction to wikis, Wikis at Work by Mat Schwartz. It is consistent with my experience. He writes that wikis are often brought in by IT but “Once a group of users adopts a wiki previously wiki-averse employees often join in.” He offers some good advice, while wikis are becoming hot, there must be a business purpose to their deployment for them to be useful. In addition, someone must guide a wiki’s implementation, then nurture it long-term for it to be successful. Just like KM or most other group oriented IT efforts. So if you need a good non-vendor intro to wikis here is one option. enterprise wikis
