For most sites over 80% of traffic is the result of search engines. I see that for myself in my blog. So determining the right key words to focus on (using the methods above) can be helpful. Amanda Watlington did a presentation on this at the Berkman blog group a while back. I was looking at it again recently, Here is what I found.
The more expensive tools are for people who buy key words for ads like in Google to see what to spend money on. If you are not an advertiser but want to use the right key words on your blog you can try Overture Key Word Selector to get a feel for them and it is free. This may be all you want to do. I do not claim to be an expert here but there are many including Amanda. Here are some tools.
Overture- Keyword Selector Tool This is free tool. You can compare terms for example, knowledge management got 13,040 in April 2006 and KM got 5255 so I would want to use knowledge management.
WordTracker – They say that” with Wordtracker you'll know which are the best keywords to drive more traffic to your sites.” It is not free or even cheap but you can take a free trial.
Build traffic – seems less expensive that Word tracker but still not free – they do offer a free trial
Good Key Words - They have several tools including Keyword Suggestion Tools that help you identify additional keywords. You type in one or more base keywords and the suggestion tool will provide you related keywords and phrases that are typed in by online searchers. They also link you to keyword top lists that allow you to obtain statistical data relating to keyword searches in engines like Google, Yahoo, and Ask Jeeves. These lists are offered by the search engines, themselves.
