Stan Garfield recently supplied the picks for Detroit Restaurants: A Local’s Favorite. Now he expands to cover Ann Arbor, the home of the University of Michigan. Ilived here the summer of 1953 but do not remmebr much so I appreciated Stan’s advice on where to eat. Here they are by categories.
Fancy - The Earle - Located in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor, The Earle serves award winning French and Italian country cuisine. The Earle opened its doors on December 13, 1977 as a Jazz Club and in 1979 transformed to its current status. It is located at 121 West Washington Ann Arbor (734) 994-0211

Mexican - Prickly Pear Southwest Café was loved by the Yahoo reviewers. It is located at 328 South Main Street, Ann Arbor 734-930-0047
Dessert (and Polish) – Amadeus – Arborfood writes “this restaurant, so full of old-world charm and quiet intimacy, would make a perfect place for a first date. A combination Viennese patisserie and Polish restaurant, Amadeus feels like a cozy, cluttered parlor.” It is located at 122 E. Washington Street Ann Arbor, (734) 665-8767
Latin American - Sabor Latino DineSite.com writes, “Best known for it's anthentic family recipes, this restaurant dishes up authentic Mexican and Latin American.” It is located at 211 N. Main (734) 214–7775
Deli - Zingerman's is Ann Arbor's most famous restaurant, and rightly so. They make large over-the-top deli sandwiches from fresh top-quality ingredients. (according to the Kitchen Chick). Iti slocated at 422 Detroit St. Ann Arbor, 734-663-3354

Pub - Red Hawk Bar & Grill The Beer Advocate writes, “Red Hawk is a great idea and fills a nice niche in Ann Arbor's array of bars and restaurants - great pub feel and drink selection but its actually a restaurant, and friendly to all types of people.” It is located at 316 South State Street, 734-994-4004
Diner - Fleetwood Diner – Arborfood restaurants site says that, “Opened in 1946 as the Dagwood and rechristened the Fleetwood in 1971, the little downtown diner has been the hang of prophets and bums, beatniks and hippies, and a host of Ann Arbor characters.” They serve hippie hash which orginated when “Short-order cooks originally used grated potatoes to clean the gunk off a caked griddle; doubtless some curious cook sampled the mass of accumulated flavors and found them irresistible..” The site concludes, “The Fleetwood Diner still plays host to Ann Arbor's colorful characters, now mostly chain-smoking kids with psychedelic hair and bodily perforations.” It is located at 300 South Ashley (734) 995-5502
