A few weeks ago Stan Garfield gave me a list of his favorite places to eat in the Detriot area. Steve Carter, a friend of Stan’s passed on a new list. He said the key tp these places is more ambiance then quality of food:. Miller’s Bar was the only duplicate from Stan’s list. They are not dress up places. If you want to dress up, he siad to go to Giovanni’s in at 330 S. Oakwood In Detroit. Here are the rest.
Speedboat Bar – Wyandotte – serves swine burgers, “award winning” chili, and other bar food and claims to be the best place to eat in Wyandotte. It is located at 749 Biddle St, Wyandotte, MI (734) 282-5750
Red Coat Tavern – Birmingham. The Metro Times says, that is “where the upscale chefs of Royal Oak and Birmingham go after work to get a burger and select from a long list of beers.” The food gets better the later it is. The Red Coat is located at 31542 Woodward Ave., Royal Oak, MI 248-549-0300
Gest Omelets – Redford – noted for eggs and good service. It is located at 25906 Plymouth Rd, Redford, MI (313) 937-3540
Green Lantern - Madison Heights offers traditonal pizza at good prices in a kid firendly bar. It is located at 28960 John R Rd, Madison Heights, (248) 541-5439
Nemo's – Detroit is a favorite bar for Tigers and Red Wings fans. City Searc adds, “Framed sports sections and newspapers adorn the walls, as do autographs of local sports greats. A tin ceiling and wood bar make for a sentimental feel.” It is located at 1384 Michigan Ave, Detroit, (313) 965-3180
Steve's Deli - Bloomfield Hills Steve himself invites you to “stop in for a taste of our homemade chicken soup or take some home with you. On the weekends you can sample Dorothy's homemade turkey chili or stop in during any other day of the week for some of our delicious baked short ribs.” It is located at 6646 Telegraph (at Maple Rd. in Bloomfield Plaza) Bloomfield Hills, 248-932-0800.
Traffic Jam & Snug – Started in 1965 in mid-town Detroit,, they have their owb bakery, diary, and brewery. What more could you ask for. Cheese and beer take turns using the brewing equipment. It is located at 511 W Canfield St

Joseph's Coney Island – Northville – serves the best Coney dogs in town. It is located at 113 W Main Street, Northville, 248.380.6111
Polish Yacht Club in the Ivanhoe Cafe – Detroit. Their site says that The Ivanhoe Cafe was founded in 1909 by Stanislaus Grendzinski who had eight children, one who was named Agnes… The Polish Yacht Club, which is part of the Ivanhoe's heritage, was founded in 1961. .. was formed to provide some of the "regulars" with a reason to attend monthly meetings at the bar. You don't need a boat to be a member, though. At one time during its existence members once asked the Detroit City Council to dig a canal from the Detroit River to the Ivanhoe so they could have dockage space near the bar. Fleetwood Diner - Ann Arbor – Arborfood restaurants site says that, “Opened in 1946 as the Dagwood and rechristened the Fleetwood in 1971, the little downtown diner has been the hang of prophets and bums, beatniks and hippies, and a host of Ann Arbor characters.” They serve hippie hash which orginated when “Short-order cooks originally used grated potatoes to clean the gunk off a caked griddle; doubtless some curious cook sampled the mass of accumulated flavors and found them irresistible..” The site concludes, “The Fleetwood Diner still plays host to Ann Arbor's colorful characters, now mostly chain-smoking kids with psychedelic hair and bodily perforations.” It is located at 300 South Ashley (734) 995-5502

I also live in Detroit -- well Downriver. I was born and raised in Wyandotte and have NEVER been to the Speedboat. Guess I'd better get there. You can't miss it, it's got a speedboat on the roof.
If anyone is interested in a higher end restaurant in Wyandotte, Portofino's is yummy. They have lots of seating on the outdoor deck that is right on the Detroit River. Great spot in the summer.
I have to Ditto the Red Coat - to die for burgers.
How could the lists miss Carl's Chop House? http://www.carlschophouse.com/ Went there for my anniversary last year. Gorgeous!
