My friend Don Lesser lives in Amherst, MA and writes on food and other topics on occasion for the local paper. Recently I got Don to name his favorite places to eat in the area which I covered last weekend. Today, he adds his favorite brew pubs. As I said, Don is an excellent cook and food critic so I am confident on these selections. They are listed in order of preference.
People’s Pint in Greenfield, MA offers good food and the best beer. They also have excellent ginger beer. It has an open mike Jazz Jam on the second Monday of each month and music on other nights, as well. It is located at 24 Federal St. Greenfield, Massachusetts, 01301 (413) 773-0333
The Northampton Brewery has decent food and excellent beer. It claims to be the oldest operating brewpub in the northeast. It is located at 11 Brewster Court Northampton MA 01060 (413) 584-9903
The Amherst Brewery offers a reasonable alternative to the top two. They also have live music. It is located at 24-36 No. Pleasant Street. Amherst, MA 01002 413-253-4400
There are also some regular small breweries in the area with great beer. The Paper City Brewery in Holyoke has tours and sometimes has tasting sessions. Two good selections are Holyoke Dam Ale and Winter Place Wee Heavy (Scotch style ale). It is located at 108 Cabot Street, Holyoke (413) 535-1588.
The Berkshire Brewery in South Deerfield has great traditional ale – the Steel Rail Pale Ale. It is located at 12 Rail Road Street South Deerfield, Ma 01373-0096 (413) 665-6600.
