According to Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox article, Weblog Usability: The Top Ten Design Mistakes, “Weblogs are often too internally focused and ignore key usability issues, making it hard for new readers to understand the site and trust the author.” He then gives the top ten design mistakes that many bloggers commit. The list is actually quite good. I am always frustrated when I go to a blog and find the author’s bio and photo are missing. You want to know who you are connecting with if there is a connection. Other common mistakes are posts with non-descript titles and links that do not say where they go (click here?). Google also does not like to find these last two instances and you are less likely to be found with Google if they are missing from your blog. If also does not help if your calendar is your only navigation and you publish on an irregular basis. There is more in the article.
