My friend Don Lesser has written in his blog on Portuguese cooking as done on Cape Cod. Don includes recipes for clam stuffing, potatoes and chorizo, and Portuguese seafood stew. Go to his blog for the details. I was recently in Provincetown and took back stuff from the Provincetown Bakery which Don recommends. The various Portuguese pastries made for a great breakfast the next day. Tony the owner is quoted, "Desserts first, life is short." We took his advice and started the day with desert.
Don also mentions that, “if you can find a copy of Howard Mitchum's Provincetown Seafood Cookbook, you'll have the mother lode of Portuguese Cape Cod cookery,” and adds that, “the Provincetown restaurant Clem and Ursie's serves pretty much the entire Provincetown Seafood Cookbook.”
While eating his food, listen to Fado. The sad, but beautiful, music originated in the 1820s in Portugal and is marked by mournful tunes and lyrics. I find it has the same power as the blues, to help you feel sad and, at the same time, to feel good about it. Here is my take on Three Fado Queens - Amália Rodrigues, Mariza, Cristina Branco.
I saw that Mitchum also has a New Orleans seafood cook book, Creole Gumbo and All That Jazz: A New Orleans Seafood Cookbook.
