The American Strategic Management Institute (ASMI) is sponsoring the Performance Measures for Knowledge Management Initiatives conference in Houston on November 9 and 10. It is designed to enable attendees to better justify knowledge management initiatives with performance measures and ROI, to increase collaboration between areas of expertise, and assess and increase the alignment of human capital and technology. There are many good sessions.
I am speaking on “Measuring the Effectiveness of Blogging in Business” on Nov. 10 in the morning. This session summarizes the insights gained from the interviews for our book, Business Blogs: A Practical Guide, and addresses the use of blogs for knowledge management, customer connection, project management, as well as internal communication and collaboration. Ways to measure the business effectiveness of blogs will be covered along with examples of the practical application of these metrics.
On November 9, Peter Gloor, at MIT, will talk about “Unleashing Collaborative Innovation and Social Networks for Enhanced Efficiency.” In this session we cover the concept of COINs or Collaborative Innovation Networks and how to uncover and nurture them. Peter will be drawing on his recent book, Swarm Creativity.
On Nov. 9, Wesley Vestal of APQC will address “Understanding and Applying the Knowledge Portfolio of the Enterprise.” In this session, he will discuss the needs to integrate KM and learning and ways to do this. This integration is essential in an era when more learning occurs on the job than in the classroom. He will draw on an APQC recent best practice study. Wesley will also lead a post-conference workshop on Establishing Measures and Metrics to Begin an Organizational Knowledge Management Program. Farida Hasanali, also from APQC, will discuss “Retaining Valuable Knowledge: Proactive Strategies to Deal with a Shifting Workforce.” This session addresses how to deal with retaining knowledge from the many employees who are moving to retirement. Farida’s blog, the APQC Knowledge Management Blog is a case study in our book, Business Blogs: A Practical Guide.
There are a number of other speakers. It will be great to catch up with Wesley and Farida. I hope to see you there.
