Sarah Ives, my daughter, went to Dartmouth College in Hanover New Hampshire, graduating in 2003. Dartmouth is located in Hanover New Hampshire located on the border with Norwich Vermont. It is about two hours drive from Boston through some nice scenery that I got to know quite well. Here are her favorites from four years of eating in the area. I have been to a few on visits.
Home Hill Inn is the most upscale of the group offering high end Provencal cooking in a large old inn. The owner and chef is Rtiz-Escoffer trained Victoria du Roure. There are a few rooms in the inn if you need to stay over after a big meal. It is located in 703 River Road, Plainfield, NH (603) 675 – 6165.
Simon Pearce Restaurant is located in the glass making place of the same name. The complex is called the Mill in Quechee and the dining area overlooks a waterfall and the Ottauquechee River. There is a nice picture of the site on their web site. I have been there a few times and the food matches the setting. It is located at 1760 Main St. Quechee, VT (802) 295-1470.
Peyton Place Restaurant at the Mann Tavern provides eclectic food, with both local and international offerings. Owners are Jim, Heidi, Sophie and Shamus Peyton. It is located in an old colonial era building on RR 10, Orford, NH 03777 (603) 353-9100
Cafe Buon Gustaio (CBG's) offers good Italian food with a rotating menu so you can return again for new pasta dishes - pricey, but good. Chef Kirk Holmes “transforms classic Mediterranean recipes into exciting new world dishes.” It is located in Hanover. It is located at 72 South Main Street, Hanover NH 03755 (603) 643-5711.
The Perfect Pear is next to a waterfall. It has country feel with good food reasonably priced. Their tomato soup is outstanding and they use local organic ingredients. Their site says that it “serves American Bistro Fare.......kinda like comfort food with a twist.” It is located on Main Street, Bradford, Vermont (802) 222-5912
Rosey Jekes is a coffee shop near the college that serves great panini for lunch, along with biscotti and other baked goods. It is located in 25 Lebanon Street Hanover, New Hampshire 03755 603-643-3693
Murphy’s on the Green is an Irish pub and traditional Dartmouth place next to the college. It is good for watching football with a warm soup in the Fall. We went there for lunch a number of times. It is located at 11 South Main Street, Hanover, NH (603) 643-4075.
Anne Stanton, President of the Norwich Group, who has long lived and worked in the area helped me find some of these places and suggested two new ones. The Painted Table, a new place in White River Junction with every table painted differently, is too new to get in the online directories.
Yama is a Japanese place in Lebanon. It has the best sushi in the area for those who can not stay away from it. There is also good Japanese food in the cooked categories. Sarah has been there a few times as it opened her senior year and she agrees with Anne’s view. Yama is located at 96 Main St. West Lebanon, NH 03784 (603) 298-5477.
