Kronenhalle is a classic upscale place. As the Economist says, “What started out as a humble beer hall in 1845 is anything but today. This local institution is where prominent Zurchers come for a view—not just of other important patrons, but of original Impressionist paintings. On the ground floor, works by none other than Picasso, Miro and Chagall may well distract you from the accomplished Swiss cooking. Upstairs, look out for works by Alberto Giacometti and other Swiss artists.” It is located at Raemistrasse 4 Zurich 8001 Tel: +41 (0) 1 251 66 69
Cafe Spruengli - original Lindt & Spruengli place, cafe, pastries, snacks, popular during the day, lots of Zurich Brahmins. It is located at Bahnhofstrasse 21, Tel. 01 224 46 15.
Bodega Espanola - spanish cuisine - excellent wine. Fodor’s says, “The dark-paneled interior of the upstairs restaurant of this Niederdorf spot is encircled with the coats of arms of old Spanish provinces and strung with garlands of onions and garlic. It specializes in big steaks, good seafood, omelets, and paella. Be sure to sample the excellent house Rioja (a Spanish-wine specialty shop adjoins, so the choice is extensive) and crown your meal with a Cuban cigar. Downstairs is a smoky bar that serves amazing tapas.” It is located at Muensterg. 15, Tel. 01-251 23 10
Neue Waid – It has the best view of Zurich, okay Swiss food. It is located at Waldbadstrasse 45, Tel. 01 271 64 60.
Sonnenberg – It has the second best view of Zurich, great Swiss food, upscale. One review says, “The restaurant is right next to the FIFA building (it's called the FIFA-Restaurant) and enjoys beautiful views down of Lake Zurich and the towns around it. The food is almost excellent, and the service flawless. Comprehensive wine list as well.” Located at Hitzigiveg 15, Tel. 01 266 97 97.
Pizzeria da Amici - informal with great outside garden. As a local food guide says, “Wir haben feine Pasta Gerichte. Die Pasta ist bei uns hausgemacht. Auch unsere Pizzas sind ausgezeichnet.“ It is located at Schaffhauserstrasse 113, Tel. 01361 21 14
At Spruengli, go straight for the truffles!
