New Grafton Gallery is an art gallery in Barnes (UK) run by Claudia Wolfers and Janine Peake. Jannie is a good friend, I first meet when her husband, John Geanuracs, and I worked together in London in 1995. I have been there several times and highly recommend it. New Grafton Gallery is located at 49 Church Road, Barnes, London, SW13 9HH Tel: 020 8748 8850.
The New Grafton Gallery was founded by David Wolfers (1917-2001), who promoted modern British figurative art. From its beginnings in London's Mayfair, the New Grafton Gallery supported a cross-section of British talent, which included the established names of Elisabeth Frink, Carel Weight, Mary Fedden, and John Nash to the emerging talents of Richard Pikesley, Sarah Spencer, Julian Bailey and Ruth Stage. It moved to Barnes in the south-west of London in the early 1980's.
The current exhibit is, “Ruth Stage (who) trained at the Royal Academy Schools, and was discovered by David Wolfers, the founder of the New Grafton Gallery. She held her first solo exhibition at the Gallery in 1996. Her emotive landscapes, using the difficult medium of egg tempera, are unique and fresh. In 2003 Ruth won the coveted Villiers David Travel Award, which is awarded for artistic skill combined with imagination, an approach that is individual to the artist and the potential for development.”
If you go, Barnes also has a number of great restaurants and other things to do which I cover in the post below.
