Last night we heard Cuban Fantasia at the Peabody Essex Museum as part of their exhibit, “Looking at Havana” - Robert Polidori's photographic images of Havana. The atrium at the Peabody provides a great venue, with room for dancing and three tiers of balconies looking down on the court yard. The group led off with “Chan Chan” from the well known Buena Vista Social Club and proceeded to play a mix of salsa, Latin jazz, cumbia, bachata and vallenato, and mostly Dominican merengue. Cuban Fantansia is a sub set of Grupo Fantasia led by the Dominican musician, Angel Wagner. The group was nominated in 2003 as Best World Music Act, Boston Music Awards. Those in the Boston area should look for future performances.
