Lemuel Rich was born on Nov. 11, 1711. He married Elizabeth Harding on March 14, 1734, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Eldredge) Harding. She was born on May 9, 1717. Through Elizabeth, Samuel linked to three of the original Cape Cod families, primarily in Chatham: Eldridge, Harding, and Nickerson. Samuel and Elizabeth moved from Truro, MA to Gorham, ME about 1762. Lemuel and Elizabeth both died in March 1791 and are buried in Gorham. Many other Riches moved to Maine during the Revolutionary War. They had twelve children, all born in Truro, MA:
1. Lemuel, born Oct. 23, 1735*, baptized Aug. 29, 1736*, died July, 8, 1804. He married Mary Colley (born in Gray, ME in 1743 – died Nov. 24, 1805). Lemuel and his family moved from Cape Cod to Gorham, ME, and then, in 1789, to Standish, ME. He is listed in the 1790 and 1800 US Census in Standish. He first married his second cousin, Sarah Rich. They had two children: Elizabeth (1759-), Sarah (1760). Then he married Mary Colly (-1805). He had eight children: Lemuel Jr. (1770-after 1840), Boaz (1772-), Samuel (1774-), Isreal (1776-), Mary (1779-1852), Zachariah (1781-1835), John (1783-), Deliverance (1787-). Lemuel Jr. is listed in the 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, and 1840 US Census in Standish. His son, Lemuel, the 3rd is listed in the 1830, 1840, and 1870 US Census in Standish.
2. Elizabeth, baptized April 24, 1737*. She married Seth Ewer of Barnstable, MA on Sept. 30, 1757.
3. Ezekiel, born Nov. 25, 1738*, baptized Jan. 14, 1739*, died Aug. 1808 in Otisfield, ME. He married Sarah Stevens (born Jan. 7, 1744) in Nov. 2, 1765 in Gorham, ME. They moved to Otisfield, ME in 1786. They had twelve children: Ezekiel (twin) (1766-), Samuel (twin) (1776-), Reuben (1969-), Elizabeth (1771-), Benjamin (1773-1858), Sarah (1775-1868), Jerusha (1777-), William (1779-after 1850), Mehitabel (1781-), Peter (1783-), Eunice (1786-), Stephen (1789-). On August 7, 1811 Samuel bought Lot 16 range 4 in Oxford, consisting of 108 acres for $420 and gave a mortgage for $375. This area of Oxford was known as Richville.
4. Samuel, born Oct. 20, 1740.* He first married Sarah Fogg. They had two children: Samuel (1778-), Lemuel (1780-), Then he married Sarah Bracey. They had eight children: Ezekiel (1784-), Betsy, John, James, Joseph (1790-), Daniel (1792-), Sally (1794-), Ruth (1797-).
5. Deliverance, born Feb. 14, 1742*, baptized March 20, 1743, died Oct. 17, 1778 in Gorham, ME. She married James McCullister on Oct. 6, 1765.
6. Martha, born Dec. 2, 1744*, died on Aug. 13, 1813 in Otisfield, ME. She married Jonathan Sawyer on Oct. 17, 1763. They had eleven children: Elizabeth (1765-1841), Martha (1767-1839), John (1769-1837), David (1771-1811), Barnabus (1773-1862), Sarah (1775-1852), Mary (1778-), Deliverance (1780-1840), Jonathan (1782-), Eunice (1785-), Samuel (1787-).
7. Zephaniah, born Dec. 20, 1746*, baptized Feb. 8, 1747*, He married Susan Snow (born March 28, 1751) around 1770 in Gorham, ME. They had seven children: Jonathan (1771-), Ebenezer (1774-), Zephaniah (1777-), Samuel Snow (1779-), Ephriam (1781-), Benjamin (1784-), William (1786-). Sarah Snow was a direct descendent of Stephen Hopkins who was one of the original Mayflower settlers in Plymouth. (Austin, 1980, p. 174).
8. James, born Feb. 5, 1748/49*, baptized April 2, 1749*, died in Waldo, ME. He married Abigail Stevens, intensions recorded on May 3, 1775 in Gorham. She was born on April 27, 1753 in Gorham, ME. They had at five to eleven children. The first five are more certain: Robert (1776-), Mary (1778-), Abigail (1780-), Joseph (1782-), Moses (1783-) (and perhaps: Hannah, Betsy, Lucy, Sarah, Benjamin, Robert (1792-)). Lucy is said to have married Ezekiel Turner Hatch (5), a direct descendant of Elder William Brewster who was one of the original Mayflower settlers in Plymouth.
9. Mary, born Dec. 20, 1750*, died Oct. 1778 in Gorham, ME. She married Lemuel Hicks on April 20, 1771 in Gorham.
10. Sarah, born Nov. 23, 1755, died Sept. 2, 1830 in Truro. She married George Hamblin on Dec. 20, 1773 in Gorham. ME. They had eleven children: Almary (1775-), Susanna (1776-), George (1779-), John (1781-), Joseph (1783-), Sarah (1785-), Amos (1787-), Allen (1789-), Solomon (1791-), Patty (1793-), William (1796-).
11. Joel, born 1753 in Truro. He married Elizabeth Cates on May 16, 1779 in Gorham, ME. Joel served in American Revolution as member of Capt. Wentworth Stuart's Company of Col. Edmund Phinney's 31st Massachusetts Infantry with his brother Barnabus. Joel died on March 22, 1838 in Jackson, ME. Joel and Elizabeth had 15 children: John (1780-1862), Thomas (1782-), Hannah (1784-), Betsey (1785-), Joseph (1787-), Nancy (1790-), Benjamin (1791-), Amy (1793-), Andrew (1795-), Samuel Louis (1797-), Mary (1799-), Levi M. (1801-), Amos (1803-), Isreal Throndyke (1807-), Eunice (died young). His son, John(1780-1862), had 14 children through two wives, Mary Jackson (3) and Anna Riggs Merrill (12).
12. Barnabas, born 1758. He married Lydia Brown on June 12, 1779. In 1775 he served in American Revolution as member of Col. Edmund Phinney's 31st Massachusetts Infantry Regiment with his brother Joel. Barnabus and Lydia had two children: Martha (1781-), Samuel (1783-).
13. Amos, born May 17, 1759, died Mar. 12, 1847 in China, ME. He married Eunice Woodman of New Gloucester, ME (-1854) on June 4, 1781 in Gorham, ME. They had ten children: Moses (1783-), John Woodman (1785-1866), Sarah (1788-1858), Betsey (1790-1827), Lydia (1792-1854), Eunice (1794-), Issac G. (1796-186), Rufus (1799-), Ruth W. (1802-1893), Louisa (1805-1856).
