Samuel Rich was born on Oct. 20, 1740 in Truro, MA. He probably moved with his father to Gorham, ME around 1762 and then shortly afterward moved to Machias, ME. Samuel was a volunteer with the band of patriots who captured the British schooner Diligence and her armed cutter in Machias Bay, July 14, 1775. He first married Sarah (Scott) Fogg, widow of Daniel Fogg, intensions published on Mar. 9, 1767. She was born about 1744 in Millbridge, Washington, Co, ME.
Samuel and Sarah Scott Fogg had two children, all born in Machias:
1. Samuel, born Oct. 19, 1778. He married Hannah Brown. He is listed in the 1810 US Census in Machias. They had six children: Catherine, Micah Jones Talbot, William (1810-), Abigail, Ruth, Adaline.
2. Lemuel, born June 10, 1780. He married Grace Gilkey and they had seven children: Mary Ann, Lemuel F., Leonora (1813-1906), Statera (1816-1837), John Rich, Joseph, Elizabeth (1821-).
Then he married Sarah Bracey. Samuel is listed in the 1790 US Census in Machias. He died in 1796 in Machias, ME. Samuel and Sarah Bracey had eight children:
3. Ezekiel, born May 6, 1782 in Machias. He is listed in the 1810 US Census in Machias and the 1850 Census in Rockland, ME. He first married Betsy Brown on 1808 or 1809, daughter of David Brown (born on Dec. 14, 1785 in Millbridge, ME). Ezekiel and Betsy had eight children: Grace Gilkey (1810-), Samule Alden (1812-), Lemuel Benjamin (1814-), Eliza, Fanny (1819-after 1850), William (1824-), Susan Jones (1828-1913), Edward N. His second wife was Hannah Alden. Hannah(5) was the daughter of David Alden(4), son of Benjamin Alden (3), son of David Alden (2), son of John(1) Alden and wife Priscilla who came to Plymouth on the Mayflower. Susan Jones, who married Francis Simonton Bullock. The transcription of Susan's handwritten affidavit is in The Mayflower Descendant, Vol. 41, No. 2, July 1991. Ezekiel died on April 17, 1857 in Rockland, ME.
4. Betsy, born March 6, 1784 and died March 11, 1873. She married Micah Jones Talbot in 1809. They had eight children: Samuel H. (1810-), Josiah H., Peter S., Betsy Jones, James R., Micah Jones, Jr., Francis Loring, Henry L.
5. John, born Dec. 10, 1785.
6. James, born Jan. 6, 1788. He is listed in the 1810 US Census in Machias.
7. Joseph, born Jan. 5, 1790. He married Nancy Wood on Dec. 13, 1828. They had six children: James Alonzo (-1837), Ruth Elizabeth (1831-), John Joseph (1833-1834), John Joseph (1835–1866), James Alonzo (1838-), William Kelly (1841-).
8. Daniel Fogg, born July 10, 1792. He first married Martha Berry on Aug. 10, 1816. Then he married Annie Graves on June 18, 1818. He died in Cooper, ME. They had five children: Miriam (1819-), William Allen (1820-), Emeline (1824-), Lemuel J. (1826-), Micah J. (1828-). Third, he married Sarah Trott in 1830. They had five children: Daniel Stillman (1832-), Rev. Adoniram Judson (1834-), Peter Avery (1837-), Rev. Joshua Adams Lowell (1840-1919), Willard Wycliffe (1844-). Rev. Adonriam was a Unitarian Minister in Hyde Park, MA. His son Edgar was a lawyer with the Boston & Maine RR and later a lecturer on transportation at the Harvard Business School.
9. Sally, born Sept. 10, 1794 in Machias. She married Benjamin Coffin and they had no children.
10. Ruth, born July 5, 1797. She married Phineas Foster and they had three children: Joseph Warren, Micah Jones, James R.
