James Humiston was the son of Thomas Humiston ( 1699 - 1743). He was born on Oct. 12, 1727 in New Haven, Co. He married Dorcas Atwater on July 19, 1753 in New Haven. She was born on Aug. 26, 1732 in New Haven and was the granddaughter of Samuel Atwater (1664-1742) (see Atwater family). Samuel was the son of David Atwater (1615- 1691) and brother of Jonathan Atwater (1656-1726) – father of Ruth Atwater (1688-1758) who married Samuel Ives. James Humiston moved to W. Springfield after Dorcas died in Sept. 15, 1759, when she was 31, and his daughter died in 1773 at age 19, both in New Haven Co. He probably moved there in 1784 when his sons moved to W. Springfield.
After Dorcas died, James married Abigail Bishop (1731-1795*) on Dec. 11, 1760 in North Haven. They were both listed separately members of the Congregational Church in North Haven earlier that year, not yet married. James was listed as shoemaker in 1770 in North Haven. He is listed in the1800 and 1810 US Census for W. Springfield with a female over 45 in his household, but Abigail died on Nov. 20, 1795*, in W. Springfield so it likely a housekeeper. James died on June 12, 1812*, age 86, in W. Springfield.
James and Dorcas Atwater had three children, all born in New Haven Co.
1. Mary, born on May 19, 1754, died on Nov. 21, 1773 and buried in the Old Cemetery in North Haven.
2. James, born on Feb. 23, 1756, Moved to W. Springfield in 1784 and listed in W. Springfield US census in 1810, died there in Sept. 21, 1815. He married Phebe Bassett on Feb. 26, 1777 in North Haven. She was born on Nov. 22, 1759 in New Haven Co. and died on Nov. 14, 1824*. He is listed in the 1810 US Census in W. Springfield, MA as the head of a household with 2 males between 10 and 16 (likely Julius and James), 1 male between 16 and 26 (likely Benjamin or Artemas) , 1 males over 45 (himself), 1 female between 26 and 45 (likely Chole) and I female over 45 (Phebe). James and Phebe had 12 children: Issac (1778-1855), Thomas (1779-1801*), Achsah (1782-1868), Chole (1784-1850), Benjamin (1786-1825*), Polly (1787-), Artemas (1790-1874), Lurenda (1792) – 1803*), James (1792-1872), Julius (1797-1821), Russell (1800-1803*), Lurenda (1804-1805*). 3. Caleb, born May 16, 1758, died on Sept. 25, 1759 and buried in the Old Cemetery in North Haven, CT.
James and Abigail Bishop had at least one child:
1. Caleb, born May 27, 1762 in North Haven, died Jan 5, 1842* in W. Springfield, MA. Married Sarah Bishop (1764-1854) in North Haven on Feb. 14, 1782. They moved to W. Springfield in 1784 and had six children: Lovina (1783-), Abigail (1787-1837), Sarah (1789-), .Esther (1792, Bishop (1796-), Sarah (1803-1875).
