Sarah Humiston was born December 26, 1803 in W. Springfield, MA and married Sumner Ives on Nov. 26, 1829 in W. Springfield. She had five children ages 14 to 5 when her husband died in 1844. Sarah moved to Holyoke between 1850 and 1862 to live with her brother Bishop and his family. Sarah died on Nov 23, 1875 in Holyoke, MA.
The Humiston family originally settled from England in the New Haven area around 1640 and some members of the Humiston family continued to live in the New Haven area. In the 1790 US Census, there were 5 male Humistons and one female listed as heads of households in Hamden, CT along with 3 male Humistons as head of household in North Haven and 1 male and 1 female head of household in New Haven town, and 2 male heads of household in Wallingford. In the 1800 US Census there were 2 Humiston households in Hamden, 3 in North Haven, and 2 in Wallingford.
