Before going on with bios of the Ives family and those families they married into, here is a listing of military service by the Ives men and their related families though marriages in Connecticut. Part Two will cover families thorugh later marriagea in Massachusetts, Maine, and North Carolina.
Nathaniel Turner fought in the Pequot Wars in the early 1630s while living in Lynn, MA and he was named in 1639 to organize the first New Haven military group to provide for the defense of the colony.
William Ives served as a Captain the Colonial Militia in the New Haven Indian Alarms from 1642 – 1646.
William Bassett, Henry Humiston, David Yale, David Atwater, James Bishop. and John Cooper were all part of the early military company in New Haven as they were reported for minor infractions such as improper equipment or being late for watch as almost everyone else was at one time. All males between 16 and 60 were required to serve. James Bishop was made a corporal in the local militia in 1657 and promoted to sergeant in July and then resigned in August 1665.
Samuel Ives was an Ensign in first military company in the North Haven parish, started in 1718, and his older brother Joseph was the Captain.
Jonathan Ives was a lieutenant in the North Haven militia in 1754 and made Captain in 1780. Other members of the Ives family, not directly related, but cousins, also participated.
Jeremiah Ives served in the French and Indian War, enlisting twice in 1758 and 1760 in the Sixth Company from New Haven under Capt. Hitchcock. He also fought in the Revolutionary War along with is brothers, Joel, Jonathan, and Alling.
David Atwater (older brother of Ruth who married Samuel Ives) served in the French and Indian War in 1760 in the Sixth Company from New Haven under Capt. Hitchcock, along with Jeremiah Ives.
John Cooper was appointed corporal of a military company in 1654 then organized for a contemplated expedition against the Dutch on the Hudson.
Joseph Cooper was named ensign in charge of the colonial militia in North Haven in 1733.
Stephen Cooper (son of Joseph and brother of Thankful who married Jonathan Ives) served in the French and Indian War in 1760 in the Sixth Company from New Haven under Capt. Hitchcock, along with Jeremiah Ives. His uncle Abraham Cooper also served in this group.
