On June 4, 1639, the New Haven founders signed a covenant and there is now a plaque on the side of a brick building at the corner of George and College Streets marking the spot. Six ancestors of the Ives family were part of the 63 signers:
William Ives (1607-1648). He began the Ives family in Connecticut with his wife, possibly Hannah Dickerman.
Thomas Yale (1616-1683): His daughter, Mary, married William Ives’ son, Joseph, in 1672 in New Haven (or Wallingford).
Nathaniel Turner (1600-1646) was the father of Mary Turner, wife of Thomas Yale, and mother of Mary who married Joseph Ives.
David Atwater (1615-1692): His granddaughter, Ruth, married William Ives’ grandson, Samuel, in 1706 in North Haven.
William Peck (1604-1694) was the grandfather of Ruth Peck, wife of Jonathan Atwater and mother of Ruth Atwater who married Samuel Ives.
John Cooper (1610-1689): His great-granddaughter, Thankful, married Jonathan Ives, the great-grandson of William Ives, in 1737 in North Haven.
In addition, five other families arrived in New Haven within a few years of the founding and provided ancestors to the current Ives:
Thomas Smith (1634-1724): His granddaughter, Thankful Cooper, married Jonathan Ives.
William Bassett (1622-1684): His great granddaughter, Hannah Bassett, married Jeremiah Ives in 1768 in Hamden. He was also the stepfather of Joseph Ives as he married Hannah Dickerman after William Ives died in 1648..
Nicholas Street (1603-1674): His great granddaughter, Hannah Bassett, married Jeremiah Ives.
Henry Humiston (1626-1663): His great-great-great granddaughter, Sarah Humiston, married Sumner Ives in 1829 in West Springfield.
James Bishop (1625-1691): His great-great-great granddaughter, Sarah Humiston, married Sumner Ives.
Abraham Dickerman (1634-1711) came to New Haven in 1658 to marry Mary Cooper, daughter of John Cooper. His granddaughter, Hannah Bassett, married Jeremiah Ives in 1768 in Hamden. (Continued)
