Acoustic Base Player New Orleans: Painting

Here is a 16" x 20" acrylic painting of a base player taken at the 2013 Bayou Boogaloo in New Orleans. I now an artist with the Arts Council of New Orleans and particpate in their monthy art market. These markets occur generally on the last Saturday at Palmer Park in New Orleans, at the corner of S. Carrolton and S. Claiborne. Saturday September 28 is the next market and I will have a booth and offer paintings for sale. Since I arrived back in my hometown, I have been painting a variety of themes related to the city.

I have three photo albums covering my art. One is for discounted pairings under $100.  The other is for most of the rest (over $100). The third is for paintings that I have either sold or ones that are not for sale. However, if anyone is interested in them I will paint another version for them on commission. 

 

Jon Cleary at Chicki Wah Wah New Orleans #2

Here is a 24" x 24" acrylic painting of the New Orleans piano player, Jon Cleary. It is the second one I have done of him.  The painting is done for a photo taken at his Monday night solo gig at Chicki Wah Wah in New Orleans. I now an artist with the Arts Council of New Orleans and particpate in their monthy art market. This is the complete listing of my series on Mardi Gras 2013 in New Orleans. It was my first Mardi Gras in 54 years when I rode in the truck parade following Rex. So I tried to take in as much as I could. It was a wonderful reconnection with an important part of my home.

This is another in a series on Mardi Gras 2013 in New Orleans. We moved from Frenchmen Street into the French Quarter with the Krewe of Cosmic Debris and then headed to Jackson Square. Later we took a break for a late lunch at Buffa’s before more street walking and finally a party on Esplanade. We often go there on Thursday nights to see Aurora Nealandand Tom McDermott. Then back to our car parked in the Marigny near our breakfast site.

This is another in a series on Mardi Gras 2013 in New Orleans. On Mardi Gras itself we choose to be on the streets with the walking groups rather than the big parades. We started in the Marigny for a pancake breakfast and then hit the streets near Mimi’s in the Marigny. We walked up Charters to Frenchmen Street before going into the Quarter with a walking group, the Krewe of Cosmic Debris.

This is another in a series on Mardi Gras 2013 in New Orleans. On the Monday before Mardi Gras the 600 members of the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club host a great music festival on the waterfront from 10 to 6. This year we saw Amanda Shaw, Kermit Ruffins, James Rivers, and the Ed Perkins band. Below are some highlights. The chance of rain kept the crowds down but those who came felt a solidarity and the bands appreciated our presence. The rain was minor.

This is another in a series on Mardi Gras 2013 in New Orleans. Endymion followed a unique route through Mid-City on Orleans Avenue before arriving downtown. I had a friend let me stand on the top of their ladders on Orleans Ave. so I got some better photos of this parade. 

The Endymion 2013 theme was 'Ancient  Mysteries'.  The super-tandem floats depicted such mysteries as Noah's Ark, Atlantis, King Arthur. It is one of the largest parades and has the longest single float. The floats carried over 2,650 masked revelers.

This is another in a series on Mardi Gras 2013 in New Orleans. Iris and Tucks followed similar routes, one after the other and both went up Napoleon Avenue to St. Charles and on to Canal Street. They were day parades.

The Krewe of Iris was founded in 1922 but traces its roots to 1917. It is New Orleans’ largest parading Carnival organization for women. Ten years before its inaugural street parade in 1959, the Iris tableau ball became the first such event ever to be televised.

The Tucks theme for 2013 was: uncovering history. Known for its satire, the Krewe of Tucksbegan in 1969 as a group of Loyola University students. The club is named for Friar Tuck, an uptown pub where two college students decided to create their own Carnival krewe. The parade has grown from a small nighttime parade of pick-up trucks into one of the major parades. In 1983 the parade became a daytime event and in 1986 the parade route finally stretched to downtown.
