New Orleans food culture is thriving. Before the storm (aka Katrina) there were 800 real restaurants (not counting fast food) and now there are over 1300. Over 20 are in walking distance from my home. We are slowing working our way through them. Here are a sampling of dishes from the past two months.
They include such tasty items (in no special order) as: gumbo, crawfish tempura, steamed buns: pork belly and fried oysters, pan fried mussels, and soy-mirin glazed steak with fingerling potatoes and tasso, blueberry tempura with ice cream, BBQ duck with cole slaw, ribs with cheese grits and corn macheaux, eggs over easy with grits and debris, crawfish etouffee omelet, shrimp, fish, and pork tacos, eggplant and meat, shrimp with alfresco sauce on fettucine, garlic shrimp, calamari in garlic sauce, lamp chops with figs sauce, zuchinni fritters, duck confit, and flan, tempura calamari salad with radish and green vinaigrette, sashimi special served in a crispy fish, funnel cake, onion mum, bananas foster egg roll with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce, mozzerlla and salad crepe, softshell crab poboy, garlic escargot, pork belly confit slad, beer braised short ribs, flounder with shrimp and mirliton stuffing, and fried chicken.
