I started this blog as an experiment. I have been writing another blog on web 2.0 for over three years, Portals and KM. As part of this I covered art blogs a bit, most notably the work of Karen D’Amico and Mick Mather. Art exhibits were also covered on occasion on the weekends. This past year I re-started my own art after a very long absence so I decided to do an art blog myself. I am trying a different blog format with this art and photography blog. I will cover art events, art on the web, other art blogs, as well as my own work.
I have long been interested in photography and other visual arts. I am now drawing and painting again after a long absence so you will see the beginning of a journey here. I am the first to say I have a long learning curve but it has been fun so far. This blog shares my work, invites comments and offers most of the works for sale. I will continue to experiment with the design and presentation of the blog. I will also continue to experiment with my art so I will be pleased to receive any comments. You can now find a number of my paintings for sale at Artsetter, a Paris based online gallery.
My involvement in the arts has been in waves with long breaks. I was active in art in high school but delayed further involvement until after college when my interest was re-kindled. At this point I took studio courses in a variety of media in Boston at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Massachusetts College of Art, as well as the Carpenter Center at Harvard in preparation to become an art teacher, as well as an artist. Along the way to getting the needed education through a Masters at Harvard, I became interested in the development of art in children from a psychological perspective. This led to a Ph. D. in Educational Psychology at the University of Toronto and post-doctoral research in the children’s art at Harvard, along with work on the effects of media on cognition. During my graduate work, I taught art at the preschool and elementary school levels. My first college teaching assignment was at the Massachusetts College of Art in the Art Education Department.
For personal reasons I left academia in the early 80s to engage in a 25 year consulting career developing education programs for organizations, creating knowledge management, and, more recently, exploring uses of new Web technology for business. During this time I maintained my involvement in photography. In the beginning of 2006, I took several studio courses at the Cambridge Center Studio School and Cambridge Adult Education. I am continuing at the Studio School. I was accepted into the Cambridge Art Association in October 2006. One of my bed drawings was accepted at their juried show, Blue. I continue with drawing and photography and have also started painting. There are now several paintings posted on the blog, along with a number of drawings, and many more photos. So far I am working in realism as a learning experience but I hope to explore abstraction before long, and do more collage and sculpture as I have in the past.
I invite you to explore this blog and let me know what you think.
For the moment if you are interested in purchasing prints of the photographs or any of the drawings please email me at [email protected]. All of the photos are available and most of the drawings and paintings are also for sale. When asking about photos or drawings please specify the title of the blog post and the number of the work counting from left to right. For example, the picture of the coffee cup in Photos of Paris 2006 Two would be Photos of Paris 2006 Two number 2 and the picture of the Notre Dame cathedral at night in the same post would be Photos of Paris 2006 Two number 4. If the pictures wrap into a second row, start with the top row. I hope this is not confusing. I did not want to clutter the posts with some type of code for each picture. Please contact me by email if you have any questions. Thanks. Bill Ives
