Here are a few more places where we ate well in New Orleans this Fall. Lilette is another award winner. We had Braised Beef Short Ribs with roasted peppers sweet onion polenta, Potato Gnocchi with sage brown butter cream, Escargots mushrooms in Calvados cream (most amazing dish), and Mussels pickled onions chorizo saffron cream. Coquette was a 2013 New Orleans Magazine best award winner for Best Chef. We had buffalo apples with celery, hot sauce, blue cheese, walnuts; fried gulf shrimp chili jam, horseradish, scallion; sea scallops chorizo, black garlic, red onion, arugula; faro with duck liver and hog’s head cheese; and vanilla crème brûlée pear sorbet. It is located at 2800 Magazine St, (504) 265-0421
MoPho was the 2014 New Orleans Magazine best award winner for best restaurant and I can see why. We had Home Fries with Kaffir lime aioli; Sweet Corn Hushpuppies with spicy shrimp butter; Pepper Jelly Braised Cedar Key Clams, with lamb lardo, mint, crispy shallot and annatto beignets; Wood Roasted Duck Leg, Duck liver barley risotto, satsuma glaze, black cardamon, red cabbage, fennel salad. It is described as Southeast Asia by way of New Orleans. It is located at 514 City Park Ave, (504) 482-6845.
Later we went back and had Pan Roasted Sheepshead with Cushaw squash puree, satsuma, black cardamom and mizuna and Bone-In Beef Ribs in Panang Curry with Pickeled mirliton, smoked onion over noodles.
Elizabeth’s is in the Bywater. We had oyster, BBQ shrimp, soft shell crab trio, fried calamari, grouper with avocado, and peanut butter pie. It is located at 601 Gallier (504) 944-9272.
Annunciation is located in the Warehouse District. We had Fried Oysters with Melted Brie and Sauteed Spinach, Veal with Oyster Dressing, Fried Eggplant with Bernasie Sauce, Hash Browned Brussel Sprouts, Budino. It is located at 1016 Annunciation St, (504) 568-0245. A painting I did of their warm bread is under the food.
High Hat is a great place on Freret Street. We had – Cecil’s salad, oyster and fennel soup, seared Gulf fish with shrimp and potato hash, cat fish with pimento mac and cheese. It is located at 4500 Freret St, (504) 754-1336
Mandina’s is an old school Italian place in Mid-City. It was a 2014 New Orleans Magazine best award winner, We had onion rings, calamari, eggplant Creole, Eggplant Parminesian, It is located at 3800 Canal St, (504) 482-9179
Willie Mae’s Scotch House, located in Treme, is known for the best fried chicken in New Orleans, or anywhere for that matter. I would agree; and it has a James Beard award to support their efforts. They recently opened in a second location uptown at the corner of St. Charles Avenue and Cherokee Street, near my home. There are 18 of my paintings for sale at Willie Mae’s Uptown (see below). We had fried chicken, fried pork chop, sweet potato fries, and fried okra.
Mahoney’s PoBoys is well known for its great poboys. This time I had some excellent shrimp fetticine with onion strings. It is located at 3454 Magazine Street, (504) 899-3374.
Tivoli & Lee was another award winner and we can see why. We had Gnocchi with Chicken, oyster, Andouille sausage, green onion and gumbo broth; Venison Meat Balls with Mushroom scented spaetzle, sage, butternut squash, rosemary, roasted garlic, spiced cocoa; Crispy Lamb Dirty Rice with Mint remoulade; Sheepshead in tomato brother with potatoes.
