Knowledge Energies – Capturing Knowledge from Emails
I recently met with Thierry Hubert and Frederic Deriot of Knowledge Energies. They are coming up with some interesting ways to look into emails to abstract the knowledge exchanges that are normally lost through this channel. The use tags for this and these tags can be applied dynamically.
They write that most collaboration technologies like email ignore the importance of linking context and process when communication occurs so valuable knowledge is lost. This is one reason to switch to blogs as many have written about. In their approach, which requires some upfront discipline by the participant, context and process is captured so the knowledge gained can be obtained.
In the paper, Ephermel Collaboration, Theirry gives a classic example of an employee using basic email technology to build her own chaotic and undocumented process to measure progress and set a worldwide action plan. Then she cannot find anything. I have been there and I am sure everyone reading this has been there. Also. This is one reason I write my blog to find stuff such as my thought son their work. There can be other complementary solutiuons and making more structured use of email could certainly be one. As Theirry writes “Working on integrating them (collaboration tools) into core business processes and applications is the desired answer.”
We had a brief meeting and I need to learn more but I think they are on to something that could be very useful. I think there is a lot of promise here

Sorry my article is in French but it seems difficult to retrieve archives, I would recommend using Corporate Instant Messengers sometimes for ad hoc needs and keep the emails for real big needs with strong implications.
