ABC’s of SEO – David George

David George has written a helpful book, ABC’s of SEO – Search Engine Optimization Strategies. David started using the web as a Unix kernel developer at Seimens. He then worked at some of the large consulting firms including my former employer. He now lives in southern France which is a good thing.

The book starts with a definition of search engines, “a web page that allows keywords or phrases to be entered and returns results based on the relevance of the documents it holds in its index. (which could be the whole Web.) Relevance is determined by a set of automated routines referred to as algorithms.” There is more detail and then it defines search engine optimization, the process of designing or modifying a web site to get high ranking by the search engines. He notes that the search engine guys are always adjusting their algorithms to stay ahead of the cheaters, the black hats who try to trick them. So this is an ongoing challenge for those who play by the rules since the rules change.

The book then operationalizes its title by literally providing search optimization topics from A (Algorithms and anchor text) to Z (zero page rank) in separate chapters. It is clearly written for the non-technical person like me. The range of topics allows for it to be a good reference guide, as well as a straight read. It includes such helpful comments as the need to have the anchor text (the underlined part that has a link embedded in it) reflect the place you are linking to. My co-author, Amanda Watlington, had pointed out this useful tip to me and I try to follow it.
