Is KM the Killer App for Portals?

Despite the past difficulties, knowledge management is now enjoying a resurgence thanks in part to portals. The extended platform provided by portals and other technology advances offers an improved vehicle for knowledge management. The other resurgence factor is that organizations are better aligning knowledge management to specific business goals. Having cut costs over the last several years, they want to increase the productivity of their downsized workforces. Knowledge management provides an answer, as it is no longer acceptable to tolerate rampant inefficiencies in accessing the information, knowledge, and expertise to accomplish a task. The alignment of knowledge management with specific business processes to overcome these inefficiencies provides the value. This same alignment can also make the benefits portals offer tangible to the organization. Here is a Portals Magazine article which explores this opportunity for portals.
