These pictures were taken in August 2008 at sunset from the top of Snow King, a small ski hill in the town. We came down in the dark with headlights. The view was worth it.

Six Reasons to Go Digital in Photography

There’s no doubting the utility of a digital camera, but did you know that this nifty gadget is useful in more ways than one? Read on to find out why you must go digital (that is, if you have not already done so):

Photography is much easier: You have to admit, with a digital camera, all you need to do is point and shoot. And the best part of it all is that you can capture your shots again and again till you get them right without incurring any extra cost.

You get to see your pictures immediately: There’s a certain satisfaction in seeing how your photos turn out, the instant that you shoot them.

You can delete the pictures you don’t want: There are certain shots that may cause embarrassment or that may not turn out quite as well as you thought. But the best part of digital photography is that you can easily dump the pictures you don’t want with just the click of a button.

You’re saving the environment: The pollution that’s caused by the manufacture and development of films is avoided in digital photography. You can take as many pictures as you want and then transfer them to your computer or other storage media. To really be environment-friendly, you have to avoid getting your photos printed. Use a digital frame to display them or just view them on your computer.

You can edit your photos: Digital photos can be edited, effects can be added, and you can do just about anything with the latest photo editing software in the market.

Your photos are of a higher quality: Most digital cameras allow you to set the resolution and format you want for your pictures. While a higher resolution means compromising on storage space, if you’re prepared with enough backup storage media like memory cards, you can make your photos as clear as possible.

So what are you waiting for? If you haven’t upgraded to digital yet, now is the perfect time to do so!

Visions of Paradise Contest Winners from National Geographic

I did a review of the book Visions of Paradise from National Geographic on this blog. There was a related photo contest. Now the 20 winning images in National Geographic’s “Visions of Paradise” photography contest have been selected. Photographers were asked to submit images that best represented their unique vision of heaven on Earth. The winners will each receive a customized edition of the National Geographic book “Visions of Paradise,” with their winning photograph as the cover image.

The winners are: John Hart of Oconomowoc, Wisc., for two entries: a photo of a frost-covered horse and an image of a child in a fountain.
